I am of Russian/Jewish ancestry, my great grandfather came to Canada in 1860s and I am a second generation Vancouverite, so the rain, mountains and ocean views are just part of my DNA!
When I was 21, I planned a 4-month back packing adventure across Europe. Upon my return, I couldn’t shake my love of Europe, so after saving up for a few more years, I went back across the pond to live in Paris as an Au Pair. It was an amazing year, except for the challenge of living in someone else’s house, under their rules, and taking care of their children. I heaved a sigh of relief when I came back to Vancouver with a renewed love of my own independence.
I settled back into life in Vancouver, but a certain joie de vivre was missing. On a minimal office manager salary I had to creatively engineer more arts and cultural into my life without spending more money. So I began volunteering for the Vancouver arts community: the VIFF, the Comedy Festival, the Fringe Festival and other arts organizations. I also co-created and co-hosted an arts and culture radio show on CiTR. In exchange for our reviews, “Tarts on Arts”, got us loads of free tickets to all manner of great performances. Added bonus I made life-long friends and I even met my husband David at the Film Festival!
About 16 years ago we moved into the Mountain View neighbourhood. Our neighbours became friends, and then when our daughter and son came along, our neighbourhood became even more important. We view our friends as our extended chosen-family. We feel blessed to be a part of this community, and have close friends who we can count on, who are part of the fabric of our daily lives.
Eastside Fitness has grown into a natural extension of our friends and neighbours and I always see familiar faces at the studio. I love how friendly, fun and supportive it feels to be a part of the ESF family.
