For many years I thought my daily bicycle commute to and from work, walking the dog in the morning, taking the stairs and a hot yoga class per week would suffice to keep fit. But I was wrong, I began feeling tired after work. I felt I was in the body of a Hamster without the cheek pouches or little tail. I noticed a change in my muscle tone and strength. My cardio vascular output was ok, I could run a few laps around the track, but did not have the endurance to go longer distances.
About the same time there were many changes at work to adapt to. I was not sleeping well. I needed to strengthen my body so I could deal with everyday stresses, personal and professional. It was Dec. 2012, I searched for a fitness facility close by to home and found one. It was a 10 minute walk away and it had a variety of classes which interested me. I purchased a package of classes, they also had a run club which met Tues. evenings, this I would eventually join Dec 2013.
The next few years, I attended a variety of classes with different specialties such as core, cardio, weight training, yoga, posture, ugi ball, etc. I joined the run club to work on cardiovascular and running form. The classes and run club provided a balanced fitness program. I began to feel my cardio and strength improve. I was ready for a challenge. In 2016, I signed up for the BMO Half Marathon training . It was great fun training with a group and our awesome coach Juan who kept us on track. During, the BMO training schedule, I started an intense pastry training program which covered a range of pastries ( cakes, tarts, cookies, etc.) . This provided me with a lot of pastry carbs for the training run/workouts over the weeks leading up to the day of the race. I ran the race in May 2016 and surpassed my goal.
My new fitness level has given me strength to deal with everyday life. My most recent challenge : a new positon I have taken on at work.
To this day, I fit in some outdoor activities, a weekly run and attend classes whenever I can. I have made new friends and also have rekindled old friendships through my pursuit of a balanced fitness routine! I cherish the ability to do many activities right in my own community.
