The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness – Stacey Fruin

The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness – Stacey Fruin

As you know, we have been running regular posts called The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness.  The posts feature women who have taken time out of their busy lives to include exercise as part of their on going fitness and personal care routines.  We love to feature them as role models because to us they epitomize balanced, healthy living and prove that all of us, no matter how much “other” stuff we need to or want to do, really NEED to take time for ourselves.  These women are strong and connected to their communities.  In this month of May, where mom’s are honoured, we are happy to feature a mom who meets all of these criteria and also, includes her daughter in her fitness routine in the hopes of creating a positive exercise experience for her that will carry her through her life.  So, without further ado, we are pleased to introduce the May 2014 REAL Woman of Eastside Fitness… Stacey Fruin Stacey is an avid cyclist, a self-described alternative 80’s Chick, as well as a mom and a proud BC wine industry booster. She captained Team Borden Ladner Gervais LLP in the 2009 Ride to Conquer Cancer from Vancouver to Seattle, repeating the ride in 2011.Stacey also rode in the 2009 & 2010 Bicycle Trek for Life from Vancouver to Chilliwack, BC and back. The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness – Leeann F.

The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness – Leeann F.

Leeann is a mom, small business owner, cub scout leader, Little League and PAC volunteer and also just adopted a puppy!  Despite her busy schedule, she has made fitness a priority in her life. Tell us a bit about yourself.  I co-own a local agency called Town Hall, where we do strategic planning, branding, and communications, mostly with wineries. I am the ‘air traffic controller’ assigning and coordinating activities with my team, clients and media. I make plans for companies, mostly wineries, and help them implement these plans and get attention for themselves. I am a married mom, as well as a Cub Scout Leader, member of Les Dames d’Escoffier and an active member of the PAC at my son’s school. I would say I volunteer a lot of my free time and challenge others to do the same. It’s how we build our communities. If I am not working I am running, and if I am really taking a break I watch birds. As far as fitness, I have always been a big person – big as in the size of my body, but also in personality, ideas, and a big, loving spirit. I like to work hard and play hard. Being a tomboy growing up gave me a firm start on an athletic lifestyle as a youth – I played every sport and earned lots of trophies and achievements, but as an adult I have been inconsistent and gained weight, making me even bigger. A desk job, not enough movement, and a slowing metabolism, combined with some health issues in my early 30s snapped me into getting back to...

The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness – Jennifer D

Jennifer D Go Jennifer! This woman is incredibly strong, both mentally and physically. She has been in the health care industry for years but after battling with her own health issues that left her fatigued and sore, she realized it was time to take care of herself if she wanted to help others.  Even though some days she finds it difficult to get off the proverbial couch, she still makes the effort because she knows she will feel better in the end.  She has incorporated all aspects of fitness into her life over the past year;  yoga, strength training and cardio – walking to and from Eastside Fitness and even home from work some days.  And even though the Commit to Fit Move Better Challenge is over, she still does one Sun Salutation every day in the morning while her oatmeal is cooking! What is your favorite type of exercise?  Turkish Get Ups and Kettle Bell Swings while weight training. I love those because they work everything.  I just love weight training period, the focus is what I enjoy. What is your least favorite exercise? Cardio!  And, what you don’t like to do is always what you need to do! Tell us about a typical day in your life? I always have to have breakfast, sets me up for the day! Then, if I am not working, I try to do some sort of cardio first thing after breakfast to get it over with.  At home, I am always working on a house project as there always seems to be something that needs fixing or finishing. I think my...

The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness ft. Lisa Y.

Lisa Y. Lisa is a rock choir singing, downhill mountain biking, middle school teaching mom of two! Her wish, as a mom, is to instill a lifelong love of fitness and outdoor activities in her kids.  We think she is doing an awesome job of this. One of her favorite mother and daughter activities is to attend fitness and yoga classes with her daughter Odeya.   They motivate each other to go and challenge each other at the workouts.   Lisa says, “My life is a little crazy, I work full time and my son has Down Syndrome.  He’s amazing and I adore him,  but if I’m honest, he’s a little more work than your average 11 year old.”  Workouts and yoga are sometimes difficult to fit into her schedule but she knows that doing so makes her feel more energetic, strong and healthy and better equipped to deal with the demands of  her everyday life. What is your favorite type of exercise? My favourite type of exercise are biking and yoga.  I feel free when I bike. I got my first two wheeler when I was 5 years old and haven’t stopped riding ever since. What is your least favourite type of exercise? Least favourite exercise is running.  Sorry Darnelle!  (it’s okay I forgive you) Tell us about your typical day. Typical day for me starts at 6 am.  I get up, feed our dog Luna. Then make breakfast for the kids.   I get ready for work and commute 45 mins to my teaching job in Port Coquitlam.  There I am a Technology Education (wood shop, computer...
The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness, Season 2 – Dianne W.

The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness, Season 2 – Dianne W.

Dianne is another busy mom who completely impresses us.  She makes time to ride her bike, run, lift weights and do yoga despite having a career as a lawyer and being mom to a creative young son. Doing a little bit of everything, consistently, over time has given her a well rounded and healthy fitness baseline.  She loves a challenge and often tackles inconceivably long distance bike events such as the Santa Rosa Gran Fondo where she rode 103 miles up some very large mountains!  Yes…in one day!   What is your favorite type of exercise? I can’t limit it to one. My favorite types of exercise involve being outside: downhill skiing, x country skiing, swimming in a lake, running,  biking, hiking. What is your least favorite exercise? Probably weight lifting, or pushup, situps…. Tell us about a typical day in your life? Its not that exciting! The morning routine involves some combination of:  getting a snuggle in with my son, perhaps reading in bed with him,  trying to incorporate some movement (doing a sun salutation at the moment)  making lunches, cycling him to school and me to work, work, cycling home, making dinner, night time homework routine and reading, maybe a workout, and maybe, just maybe, when it is quiet, doing some sewing (I LOVE to make things). What or who inspires you? My friends and family inspire me. I learn something from all of them, each are different, and am very grateful for them. What is your favorite healthy food? Just one? Roasted Brussels sprouts, or breakfast of chia seeds, banana and almond milk. I also LOVE chunky salads...

The REAL Women of Eastside Fitness – Neera J.

Neera J. Neera is from a small Northern BC town. Born and raised there she spent every minute of her teenage years just waiting to get out.  She moved to the Lower Mainland in 1995 and loves Vancouver with all her heart.   14 years ago she landed a very cool job producing voice overs for cartoon shows!   She had never given exercise, healthy eating, and cooking, a second thought, up until a couple of years go. At that time she literally turned her life around. She started exercising regularly, eating more healthy foods and eliminating some unhealthy ones.  She now makes exercising a priority and is one of the regular morning crew at Eastside Fitness.  We have even seen her in a few EARLY morning classes!  Neera says  “It’s pretty great to be and feel consistently healthy!” She says she hopes she can inspire someone, someday to give active healthy living a try.  We know she can! What is your favorite type of exercise?  Any kind of weights! I want strong/toned arms! Biceps and triceps are my faves. What is your least favorite exercise? Anything with the word “plank” in it…side planks, plank dips, high planks, plank push ups…shall I go on? Tell us about a typical day in your life?  I’m an animation producer, and I make my own hours, so I usually start the day with a workout, go to work, come home,  do some cooking and usually end up watching my shows in the evening. It’s a pretty chill lifestyle, but I don’t have any kids! What or who inspires you?  My sister, if it weren’t...
