40 Days of Sun Salutations

November 12th – December 21st

Challenge Description

If there was one simple thing you could do each day that would help your body to move better, thereby allowing you to become more physically fit, would you do it?  The Eastside Fitness family is challenging you, once again, to preform 40 Days of Sun Salutations with us. Just like all our challenges, the idea is really simple.  And don’t worry, if you don’t know what a Sun Salutation is.  We will be posting examples and articles about them, explaining and demonstrating them in all of the classes we offer at the studio.  The challenge begins November 12th 2014 and will last 40 days until December 21st, 2014. Everybody can (and should!) do a Sun Salutation!

Challenge Rules

  • Perform at least one Sun Salutation per day between November 12th and December 21st
  • Keep track  of the number you do each day. Post photos and stories on our Eastside Fitness Facebook page and/or our #CommittoFit Challenge by Eastside Fitness Facebook group.
  • You can do any variation the of Sun Salute you choose
  • You can do the Sun Salute at home or at the studio during class times or personal training sessions or anywhere at all!  Bonus points for the strangest location!

Why Sun Salutations?

We believe that fitness should not be complicated. A Sun Salutation is a simple series of movements that puts you into all planes and axies of your body in a gentle way. It wakes up your spine and activates many muscle groups. It can take as little as one minute or as much as four minutes to complete the series depending on which version you choose to do.
A Sun Salutation series is a great way to start your day and it is also a great “warm up” for any type of fitness or exercise activity you are about to do. A good warm up consists of:

  1. Raising your body temperature.
  2. Easing your body into its full range of motion potential.
  3. Activating muscle groups that will support your body when you have loaded it or stressed it.
  4. Preforming movements similar to those you will be doing under load or stress through the day or during your workout.

The sun represents light and light is a symbol of consciousness and self-illumination. Honoring the sun during winter solstice, during the shortest daylight hours of the year, is an ancient Hindu tradition. In Sanskrit “Surya” means Sun and “Namaskara” means to bow down or salute.

8 Basic Postures are:

  • Tadasana
  • Urdhva Hastasana
  • Uttanasana
  • Lunge
  • Plank Pose
  • Chaturanga Dandasana
  • Urdhva Mukha Svanasana
  • Adho Mukha Svanasana
